Rare $WHALE Vault NFTs To Be Auctioned by Sotheby’s:

For the first time ever, the $WHALE Vault takes iconic assets to market

“This is only the beginning of this adventure.” — Brendan Dawes

Popular auction house Sotheby’s is about to make NFT history yet again by auctioning the first pieces ever brought to market by the renowned $WHALE Vault from artists Pak, Hackatao, and Brendan Dawes. These significant NFTs by mainstays of the cryptoart movement are currently owned by the $WHALE community and will be auctioned off this month.

The pieces include:

Rubik’s Lure (Pak)

still from Rubik’s Lure — Pak

Rubik’s Lure from Pak was previewed on Twitter in February 2020. It sold the next month to WhaleShark on the popular NFT platform SuperRare. The piece is a gleaming Rubik’s Cube 3.0 brilliantly looping into different squares and rectangles to form a geometric temptation looking to “lure” the viewer.

To this day, the digital artist Pak remains anonymous. The mystique generated as a result of this fact intrigues and excites collectors. By not revealing an identity, Pak retains the ability to focus more on art and innovation in the NFT space.

Though unknown to the public, Pak is no stranger to Sotheby’s. Pak’s successful auctions earlier this year saw profits in the millions. With Pak’s popularity in the space continuing to grow exponentially, collectors should see this auction for Rubik’s Lure as a rare opportunity to own one of Pak’s most valuable earlier works.

THE archetype (Hackatao)

still from THE archetype — Hackatao

Artist duo Hackatao describes their primeval piece THE archetype as “Eros, the drive of life and love and Thanatos, the drive of death and destruction; opposite forces of same strength that cannot exist without each other. In the eternal battle for prevalence between the two, we will never see a winner.” This piece perfectly depicts the duality of life and death while suggesting the need for their coexistence. THE archetype premiered on July 27, 2020, on SuperRare. WhaleShark quickly snapped it up the next day.

Hackatao is an extremely popular NFT artist duo who reside in Italy. Their name comes from “Hack” for the pleasure of going under the skin and discovering what’s hidden inside and “Tao” for Yin and Yang, their creative dynamic balance. They animate their physical art and push the boundaries of artistic expression using varied digital tools and artistic mediums. Hackatao’s art touches on issues of society, environment, humanity and crypto but also references history, psychology, and symbolism.

Hackatao’s style and attention to detail are like none other. They are truly one of the original and beloved cryptoartists in the space. Collectors new or old should see this as a unique chance to get their hands on one of their most sought-after early pieces.

Typographic Data City: Hong Kong in Motion (Brendan Dawes)

still from Typographic Data City: Hong Kong in Motion — Brendan Dawes

Brendan DawesTypographic Data City: Hong Kong in Motion was minted on January 13, 2021 to be quickly sold to WhaleShark. Brendan describes the piece as “a very fitting metaphor for the ongoing journey with my largest collector, WhaleShark.”

“The piece is created from population density data in Hong Kong and the sound of the Hong Kong subway system. The doors closing, the announcement of “Mind the Gap” in both English and Mandarin, and then the sound of the train leaving the station are a great representation of how this is only the beginning of this adventure.”

Brendan Dawes is a UK-based artist and designer with an uncanny command of an arsenal of techniques and media.

As per his site, Dawes “uses generative processes involving data, machine learning and algorithms to create interactive installations, electronic objects, online experiences, data visualizations, motion graphics and imagery for screen and print.”

Dawes pushes the definition of what art is seen as today with an impressive palette of code, sound, and whatever else he deems fit to use to create his masterpieces: digital, physical, and often somewhere in between.

Regarding the imminent Sotheby’s auction, we asked Brendan his thoughts on NFTs being auctioned off in a traditional way.

“For me it’s indicative of the impact NFTs are having in the world of art and a growing acceptance of the importance of digital and especially generative art. We always knew this was the case. But now the wider world is waking up and taking this work seriously. This is just the beginning.”

Sotheby’s involvement with NFTs may be the beginning of NFTs merging into the traditional art world, but this is also the first time the $WHALE project has sold anything from its esteemed vault.

History will be made this October for these artists, their collectors, and the entire NFT community.
